About

Aurora People

The best learning comes from within… when an experience of the world resonates with some internal knowing. This ’knowing’ can be innate, intuitive or the sum of a whole range of life experience. This ‘resonance’ of the inner and outer world is sometimes experienced as an ‘aha’ moment.

Matthew Wright

Founder and Principal

I moved into education after I had become disillusioned with my role as an engineer in the building industry… though I did learn many things from that experience. One ‘aha’ for me at the time was the different approach and thinking style required in project management to the design process. It was the impact this had on people’s performance, interactions, communication and behaviour that interested me. Inspired by a love of the outdoors I completed a Diploma of Education and through my technical background found a wonderful role teaching physics, science and outdoor education. I had found my calling. I was also fortunate to take on some leadership roles on the school’s governance and educational boards as well as senior college co-ordinator and pastoral carer.

In my latter teaching years, I worked part-time for a company that provided experiential learning activities to consultants and conferences. Again, I was inspired by how much people learned when asked to reflect on their unique experience. Concurrently, I saw the challenges and opportunities in working with the adults on the various boards of the school.

I started Aurora People because I recognized my passion for helping people grow, was becoming more about being a partner in learning, than a teacher or expert in a field. I loved my time leading and learning with young people.  I also recognized how much more they learned when they were in control of their learning through the process of reflection, examination and application.  I also saw that when we coached our students they flourished, far more than in a teacher-centred classroom learning.

From leadership roles in construction companies and educational institutions to running a small business I have great empathy and understanding for the challenges people face in their workplaces. There are a multitude of personalities we can either harness or with whom we can clash. I am optimistic enough to think we can all do it better with less stress and more grace. To complement my role as principal, facilitator and coach I have gained accreditation in various profiling instruments including LSI/GSI from Human Synergistics, TMP from Team Management Systems and HBDI from Herrmann International.

Following teaching I found new colleagues and friends in organizations that provided experiential learning for leaders and teams. I felt inspired to put into practice the learning that I had accumulated through the various roles and experiences I have had in the workplace and in education. So I started Aurora People. That was 14 years ago and I’m still loving it… and learning.
